Our Community Education Counsellor (Identified) will work alongside our Elder in Residence and join a team of passionate educators who support both students and staff to connect, create and continually improve.

This role plays an important part in providing culturally responsive supports that inspire our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to reach excellence and empower them to be their best. The successful applicant will maintain high expectations and work collaboratively to provide innovative opportunities for students to grow and excel as individuals and in community.

The successful applicant will provide cultural, well-being and academic supports to students, work closely with families and become an integral part of our school community.

It is expected that our Community Education Counsellor (Identified) strengthens student engagement, makes a positive difference to student wellbeing and impacts educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through highly-effective relationships.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are valued and celebrated. They will benefit from being part of a truly inclusive school community and contributing meaningfully to better futures for young people.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong cultural knowledge and be able to make a valuable contribution to our existing Wajin Art and Wajin Dance programs. A strong interest or experience in maintaining and retaining cultural practices is important in the role. It is assumed that the candidate has the ability to work respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, students, families and communities.

Experience supporting young people and families within education, youth or community settings is essential, along with well-developed communication skills and a willingness to lead with integrity. Qualifications in education support, youth work, community services, counselling or a related field would be highly regarded.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrate strong cultural knowledge and contribute meaningfully to the school's Wajin Art and Wajin Dance programs.
  • Show a strong interest in strengthening, maintaining and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices.
  • Work respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, students, families, and community members.
  • Have experience supporting young people and families within education, youth, or community settings.
  • Display well-developed communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Lead with integrity, professionalism and cultural respect in all aspects of the role.
  • Hold (or be working toward) qualifications in education support, youth work, community services, counselling, or a related field (would be highly regarded).
