About St Mary MacKillop College 

St Mary MacKillop College is Canberra’s largest secondary school, operating across two campuses. Years 7 to 9 are based on the Padua Campus (Wanniassa) and Years 10 to 12 are based on the St Peter’s Campus (Isabella Plains). About the Role

The Careers and Vocational Education & Training (VET) Coordinator is a member of the Curriculum Leadership Team responsible to the Principal through the Assistant Principal Academic Care for the leadership of their faculty, in accordance with College policies. The Careers and VET Coordinator leads the development and delivery of Career curriculum and programs, including the Australian School based Apprenticeships (ASbA) Program, VET Curriculum and work experience for the College. This role requires a strong emphasis on Career Development, aligning with current industry standards and student needs, while ensuring compliance with educational frameworks. The successful candidate will bring excellent teaching skills as well as exceptional Career Development and VET curriculum knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership of the Career and Vocational Education & Training programs of the College, in-line with the vision and directive of the College Principal.
  • Oversee the development of a dynamic Career and VET curriculum in line with national and state requirements.
  • Provide information, guidance and advice to assist students to explore career options.
  • Prepare and deliver Career presentations to students and their families.
  • Maintain compliance with the Catholic Education Office (CEO) RTO policies and procedures.
  • Build Career networks to provide students with relevant resources to help them make informed decisions.
  • Work with the Catholic Education Office (CEO) Registered Training Organisation Manager to monitor VET delivery and assessments, staff qualifications and currency.
  • Ensure appropriate industry-standard training opportunities are provided to students and VET teachers.
  • Manage the College’s Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA) program ensure records are accurately maintained and recorded on the Students’ Senior Secondary Certificate.
  • Monitor and ensure that College VET activity data is accurate and provided promptly to CEO RTO and ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies.
  • Supervise and support departmental staff to ensure they are fully aware of their responsibilities regarding assessment and reporting, including compliance with State and National (ACARA and BSSS) and College policies.
  • Ensure that all college courses are prepared to a quality standard for accreditation at College and BSSS
  • Lead the planning of a Careers Expo including organising and managing representatives from higher education institutions, training providers, industry and other agencies.
  • Work with relevant staff and other members of the community, to manage departmental processes for example, staff and student allocations, excursions and the purchase of resources
  • Ensure effective administrative processes in the department, including holding productive meetings, maintaining accurate records
  • Take responsibility for maintaining a safe and secure environment

Qualifications  

  • Bachelor of Teaching or Master of Teaching.
  • Postgraduate Career Qualifications
  • Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration.
  • Teaching Quality Institute (TQI) registration.
  • Experience and qualifications in Careers Development is highly desirable.

Selection Criteria 

  1. Demonstrated understanding of Careers and Vocational Education and training requirements in line with BSSS standards.
  2. A comprehensive understanding of Catalyst initiatives and High Impact Teaching Practices and the need to provide appropriate support and feedback to teaching staff.
  3. A thorough knowledge of the Australian Curriculum with the ability to organise, select and design content for effective teaching and learning within the classroom and across the school.
  4. Demonstrated capability to coordinate a teaching team effectively, to supervise staff across different subject areas, to promote their own and the department’s professional development and to work with the staff to effect change.
  5. Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills.  This includes high-level mediation and conflict resolution skills and interpersonal skills with the ability to build community.
  6. The ability to exercise sound judgment, including dealing with confidential matters.
