Position Information

The Assistant Principal Special Education – Vision Impairment Itinerant (APV) role supports schools to ensure full curriculum access for students with confirmed vision disabilities across preschools, primary schools, high schools, schools for specific purposes and support classes, while providing strong leadership across diverse contexts. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the role requires the ability to lead and mentor staff, conduct assessments, participate in review meetings, and provide expert advice to guide evidence-based adjustments. It demands the coordination of complex systems and caseloads, delivery of targeted professional learning, and liaising with the Team Around a School and external providers. Central to this role is modelling high expectations, fostering a collaborative and accountable team culture, and building staff capability to ensure cohesive, consistent practices that improve outcomes for students with vision impairment. The APV position is based at Kooringal Public School in the Wagga Wagga network. Kooringal Public School has a current enrolment of 370 students across K-6. The student population comprises of 22% Aboriginal students and 15% of our students have a language other than English. The position requires travel to schools across networks.

General Selection Criteria
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
Specific Selection Criteria
In addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach students with vision impairment.

1. Demonstrated approval and willingness to lead staff and teach students with vision impairment across all educational settings from Preschool to Year 12, including transitions to pre and post school environments. Initiates and builds capacity to form strong relationships with students, families and schools, to provide leadership in sustaining a high-performing Vision Team.

2. Proven ability to lead and coordinate innovative complex systems, processes and procedures, while effectively coordinating and maintaining a cohesive and high-performing vision support team based at multiple schools across networks with willingness to travel in an itinerant capacity.

3. Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, and the proven ability to work effectively with a wide range of professionals across networks. Implements efficient organisational and strategic management skills to lead collaborative planning, support team operations at the base school, and coordinate effective case management across the networks.

4. Proven capacity to lead an effective and inclusive learning environment, grounded in strong knowledge of the Disability Standards for Education and Aboriginal Education Policy. Understands the needs of students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Leads high quality, researched-based professional learning to support inclusive teaching practices and strengthening school and team capability to meet the needs of students with vision impairment.

 
  
Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

Ability and willingness to travel between worksites. The successful applicant will be required to travel by personal transport and Department Motor Vehicles to schools across networks to support students with visual impairments and will require a current driver’s licence and reliable vehicle. The successful applicant will be required to travel long distances in rural areas and stay away from home overnight regularly.
