Position Information

Newcastle Senior School (NSS) is a school for specific purposes located in Waratah NSW, that caters for students with a significant disability in Years 9 to 12. Currently there are 7 classes with 40 students enrolled including 15% Aboriginal/ Torres Strait Islander students. NSS is part of a unique three school model that works closely with its Junior and Middle schools, all located on separate campus’s. NSS aims to build positive relationships and provide an inclusive, engaging and respectful school environment focused on maximising each student’s skills for life and learning. The school environment includes accessible play equipment, a hydrotherapy pool, inclusive kitchen and a Mini Woolworths. Programs focus on building independence skills for a successful transition to life after school. The successful applicant would start at NSS Term 1 2025.

General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

Specific Selection Criteria

In addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach special education and /or experience teaching students with complex learning needs including moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, physical disabilities and students on the autism spectrum.

Demonstrated leadership capacity to improve learning outcomes for students demonstrating complex and challenging behaviours by: planning and working collaboratively with key stakeholders; and building staff capacity to manage behaviours of concern. 

Demonstrated abilities to support the Principal, teachers and stakeholders in identifying opportunities, and preparing students with complex needs, for rewarding post school lives. 

Demonstrated leadership capabilities to achieve an inclusive and equitable learning environment where all students and staff feel known, valued and cared for.

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
