Position Information
Loftus Public School is centrally located in the suburb of Loftus within the Sutherland Shire, near The Royal National Park. Our school currently enrols around 340 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 across 13 mainstream classes, an Autism Support class(K-6) and an Early Intervention program for preschool students with a confirmed disability. The Early Intervention program supports 21 preschool-aged children across three weekly sessions. Six percent of our students identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and 10% come from families with an English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) background.
Student wellbeing is central to all decision-making at Loftus Public School. We implement the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework to foster a positive, safe, and supportive learning culture that improves social, emotional, behavioural, and academic outcomes for all students.
Our dedicated and professional staff work collaboratively to provide quality education tailored to meet student needs through engaging classroom programs, targeted support interventions, differentiation, enrichment, and extension.
In 2026 we will see the establishment of a Support Unit with the addition of a second Autism Support Class(K-6). The Assistant Principal Special Education will lead and supervise the Support Unit team and will be an integral member of the Loftus Public School Executive team.
General Selection Criteria
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
Specific Selection Criteria
In addition to the general selection criteria, Approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with autism, complex learning, and behavioural needs within a support class. Demonstrated ability to balance exemplary classroom teaching practice with the role of Assistant Principal, including enhancing positive relationships with families to support student wellbeing and achievement.
Proven knowledge and understanding of evidence-informed teaching practices and the ability to support and guide educators in integrating specialised teaching methods and therapies that maximise student engagement and development. A focus on assisting every child to connect, succeed, and thrive by promoting equity and inclusion within the wider school community.
Ability to lead, support, and mentor colleagues to drive continuous improvement in student learning outcomes within the support unit, by establishing collaborative and data-driven practices that foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively as a dynamic member of the executive leadership team and to lead whole school initiatives aligned with the school’s strategic directions.
Conditions
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
