Position Information

Hume Public School is situated in Lavington, on Wiradjuri Country, along the New South Wales/Victorian border. With an enrolment of 183 students, the school proudly represents a diverse community, with 35% of its students identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and 16% coming from an English as an Additional Language or Dialect background.

The school offers mainstream classes for kindergarten through Year 6, along with a preschool and a Special Education Unit. This unit provides a supportive and nurturing environment for students in our Multi-Categorical (MC), Moderate/Severe Intellectual (IO/IS), and Early Intervention classes, all located within the grounds of the mainstream school. Staff members work collaboratively within the unit and alongside their mainstream colleagues to deliver inclusive and quality educational experiences and implement best practices.

Our staff fosters a culture of inclusion and positive relationships, believing that students thrive when they feel safe, connected, and supported in regulating their emotions and behaviour. Throughout the school, high expectations, active engagement in learning, and a sense of community are consistently promoted by our dedicated staff.

General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

Specific Selection Criteria

In addition to the general selection criteria, Approval to teach special education and/or demonstrated successful experience teaching in a support class with autism, moderate and severe intellectual disabilities, expressive and receptive language delays and a range of emotional and behavioural needs.

Proven ability to engage and inspire teaching staff in the development of differentiated teaching and learning programs and assessment based on a sound knowledge of curriculum and the Disability Standards.

High level organisational skills and a demonstrated ability to balance classroom teaching and the complex administrative role of an executive in the special education setting.

Knowledge of and successful experience implementing evidence-based wellbeing and behaviour support systems and programs with the ability to lead and support staff to manage complex student behaviours and risk management across the Unit.

A proven capacity to collaboratively lead and contribute to continuous whole-school improvement, particularly in relation to students with additional and diverse needs and initiatives that support student learning and achievement.

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
