Position Information

Bellambi Public School is situated on the traditional lands of the Dharawal people, in the coastal northern suburbs of Wollongong. Nestled in an expansive area with generous open play spaces, our school provides an enriching learning environment for students. The school boasts multiple fields and engaging learning environments, ensuring a diverse range of recreational and learning opportunities. In 2025, we will have ten classes, three within our Support Unit with a student demographic that includes 44% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and 17% from non-English speaking backgrounds. Currently the school has 171 students enrolled. 

The Assistant Principal Special Education will support the routines for the Support Unit, teach one of the 3 support classes in the school, lead and supervise the support class teaching and support staff, and will oversee all aspects of teaching and learning for students. The Assistant Principal is part of the school leadership team along with the Principal and Assistant Principals.

General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

Specific Selection Criteria

In addition to the general selection criteria, 

  1. Approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with autism, intellectual disabilities and complex learning and behavioural needs within a support class with a demonstrated ability to effectively manage the dual role of Assistant Principal and exemplary specidal education teacher. 
  2. Evidence of high level interpersonal skills and the capacity to effectively communicate across all stakeholders within the school context including students, staff, parents/carers, external agencies and the wider community to promote the inclusion of students with multifaceted needs.
  3. Demonstrated leadership skills with a proven ability to lead evidence-based and evaluative practices to implement high quality, engaging, differentiated curriculum including the development and implementation of individual learning programs.
  4. Evidence of leading and implementing flexible classroom management strategies which create a positive and inclusive learning environment to promote student engagement and connection.

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
