Aboriginal Education Worker

Part time, temporary position

22 hrs per week

Role will include: 

  • Working with the school leadership team to implement the Diocesan Action Plan for the Education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples including: 
  • Acting as a role model for students by encouraging them to take pride in all aspects of their schooling and their cultural identity.

  • Promoting a sense of welcome and belonging, so that all in the school community will gain greater respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ culture and each child will be provided with educational opportunities that are rich, fulfilling and promote a love of God.

  • Supporting the school to understand and show respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s knowledge, skills and traditions to build and maintain relationships that are based on mutual respect and reconciliation.

  • Raising expectations and enhancing the quality of student learning for all students by supporting the development of individualised plans that include cultural, curriculum and career goals. 

  • Developing a partnership with the local Aboriginal community, families and the school to create and promote a school environment that respects and values local Aboriginal cultures and protocols.

Essential Criteria: 

  • Must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent (documented confirmation of Aboriginality is a requirement at interview). Exemption under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 

  • Must hold a current Working with Children Check clearance

  • Compliance with the Accreditation to Work Teach and Lead Policy upon appointment

Selection Criteria will focus on: 

  • The ability to foster and maintain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Spirituality whilst enhancing the values and beliefs and ethos of the Catholic Church.

  • The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with students and staff in order to advocate for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders students and their families. 

  • The ability to work alongside school leadership to build the cultural capacity of the school community.

  • The ability to maintain strong quality partnerships with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and service providers.

  • Sound literacy, numeracy and IT skills (or a willingness to learn) and knowledge and appreciation of the ways students learn.

  • Preparedness to work with small groups of children and willingness to work alongside teachers in the classroom.
