Research has shown that the critical period for language acquisition is from birth to the onset of puberty. The explicit teaching of grammar and punctuation in the primary school years is therefore essential if students are to confidently manipulate their use of language for a variety of contexts during their high school years and beyond.

Join us for the opportunity to experience hands-on activities and techniques for teaching grammar from a leading literacy expert.

Please note there are 2 sessions, it is recommended that participants attend both sessions to get the full benefit.

Session 1

  • Compare some key research findings relating to the teaching and learning of grammar to your own experience(s)
  • Learn some effective strategies to teach critical aspects of written sentence structure
  • Adapt a hands-on grammar activity for your own stage 2 or 3 teaching context

Meet the speaker

Helen Pearson is an experienced presenter of professional development workshops and currently lectures in literacy, EAL/D and assessment at UNSW Sydney. She wrote the NESA Grammar Guide for Teachers, and the accompanying guide for parents wanting to support their children's understanding of grammar; as well as the popular Spelling Rules! K-6 series.
