Welcome to Comview2016
Comview2016 offers an extensive program with over 100 sessions and workshops to choose from. With something for all educators, the program consists of five key elements:
- the implementation of curriculum change across Years 7 to 12
- an increased emphasis on effective pedagogical practices
- subject discipline updates
- collaboration and networking
- exposure to new resources.
2017 sees the implementation of the newly accredited VCE Business Management and VCE Economics Units 1 to 4. A full suite of presentations are available to assist teachers in understanding key knowledge and skills and to plan accordingly. VCE Legal Studies is also under review and Comview2016 participants can elect to attend an update on either day of the conference to ensure you are abreast of recent developments.
In addition, the new Victorian Curriculum F–10 is due for full implementation in 2017. Inclusive of Economics and Business and Civics and Citizenship, workshops provide the opportunity to explore the teaching and learning of critical and creative thinking, ethical capabilities and the design of deep learning. Comview2016 provides comprehensive opportunities to learn from colleagues of the range of ways the Victorian Curriculum is being implemented across schools.
Comview2016 consists of two full-day strands in VCE Accounting, Business Management, Economics and Legal Studies. You can learn about contemporary Accounting reporting, connect with the recent practice of well-known and emerging businesses, discuss the latest economic issues and policies and learn of the latest developments in the law and legal system.
Throughout the program you will see a range of sessions of a cross curriculum nature – these are listed in the two-day strand Of interest to all which contains a host of options for your consideration. You can spend a half-day workshop on giving effective feedback to students, explore the creative use of technology in the curriculum, be updated on the latest research showing skills young people need and delve into the evidence on learning and what works with students.

Greg is a barrister who has advised and appeared in cases involving anti-terror laws. He was involved in Australia’s biggest terrorism trial with 25 lawyers, 12 accused and 482 secretly recorded conversations. Greg will take the audience behind the scene to tell a story about defence of clients.

His Honour was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria and commenced as Chair of the Victorian Law Reform Commission in 2012. In this presentation Philip reports on the Victorian Law Reform Commission review into what should be the role of victims before, during and after a criminal trial, including whether the victim should have a role – and if so, what role – at stages of the criminal trial process.

An Adjunct Professor with Victoria University, Dr Emerson is an eminent economist with almost 35 years’ experience in public policy, politics and public service. Craig was Minister for Trade and Competitiveness in the Gillard Government and Senior Adviser to Prime Minister Bob Hawke. With a PhD in Economics from the Australian National University, in this presentation Craig will provide a critique of Australia’s current economic policy.

Professor Evans is Dean of Melbourne Law School and Chair of the Council of Australian Law Deans. Carolyn is an internationally recognised expert on religious freedom and the relationship between law and religion. In this presentation Carolyn will address the topic of Parliament and same sex marriage – do we need a plebiscite?

The 2016 Commonwealth Bank John Monash Scholar, Victoria and Senior Research Officer at the Melbourne Institute, The University of Melbourne, Reuben was part of Harvard Professor Robert Putnam’s research team and has co-authored papers with both Putnam and Lord Nicolas Stern (London School of Economics). In this presentation Reuban will explore Brexit and highlight what the economic evidence shows.

Rob is Director, Centre for Innovative Justice at RMIT University. He is well known as a Victorian Attorney-General who instigated significant changes to Victoria's legal system. In this session Rob will outline the CIJ’s work to develop a Justice Index to encourage all jurisdictions to take a more innovative and meaningful approach to the way in which justice is not only delivered and measured, but ultimately experienced by those who most need its help.

Dr Keon-Cohen recently retired from the Victorian bar after 35 years in practice. He was junior counsel for Eddie Mabo and his co-plaintiffs during the ten years of the litigation (1982–1992). Join Bryan in this moving account, with original pictures, of the case for native title.
Peter Martin

Well known Economics Editor at The Age, Peter Martin, a former Commonwealth Treasury official, has reported economics for the ABC and then for Fairfax Media since 1985. Peter has been economics correspondent for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, and economics editor of The Canberra Times. In the early 2000s he served as the ABC’s Tokyo correspondent. Join Peter as he addresses issues and policies surrounding interest rates, budget settings and tax policy.

Dr Venkat Narayanan

Venkat is a lecturer in taxation and accounting at RMIT University. His research interests include social and environmental accounting and sustainability and accounting education. Accounting is currently taught as a technical discipline with little attention to the inter-connectedness of accounting and society. In this presentation Venkat outlines a framework which empowers educators to look at and teach accounting differently.

The Hon Edward O’Donohue is Shadow Minister for Police, Shadow Minister for Community Safety and Shadow Minister for Corrections and Member for Eastern Victoria Region. Previously he was an article Clerk/Solicitor and Barrister. In this presentation, as Chair of the Legal and Social Issues Committee, Edward will report on the Inquiry into end of life choices.

In 2014 the Victorian Ombudsman announced an investigation into the rehabilitation and transitional services for prisoners in Victoria. The correctional system is also the subject of more complaints to the Ombudsman than any other government agency. In this session Sasha, Assistant Ombudsman, provides an overview of the issues raised in the report and the recommendations for change.
