Pohatu penguins, a family owned business with more than 30 years of penguin conservation. Now the largest Little Penguin colony on mainland NZ.
Pohatu is a bay on the south eastern side of Banks peninsula, not far from Akaroa and home to New Zealand’s largest little penguin colony on the main land.
Pohatu Penguins works as a tour operator, taking people sea kayaking and wildlife viewing. All of our trips are educational; talking about the penguin conservation as well as other wildlife we encounter (weta, gecko, sea-birds, New-Zealand fur seal...).
At Pohatu Penguins, we are interested in offering school trips. We believe Pohatu bay would be a great location for a day trip or a camp for students giving them a better understanding and hands on experience with conservation.
Pohatu is a marine reserve and has native bush reserves with walking tracks and many endemic plant and insect species.
The land owners have been doing penguin’s conservation for the last 30 years and we would be really happy to share with you what we do: predators’ trapping, nesting sites monitoring and in season rehabilitation.
