Thirroul Public School has an enrolment of 489 students and is at the base of the lllawarra escarpment and on the northern beaches of Wollongong NSW. The school has a mixture of experienced, mid-career and early career teachers.
The student cohort is made up of 7% Aboriginal students, 7% of English as a second language students and 86% white Anglo-Saxon background students. The community is high socio economic and children commence school with excellent pre literacy and pre numeracy skillsets.
The community highly values education and parents and carers are keen to be involved in decision making and to support the teachers and the school. The school has a strong reputation in the creative arts, student efficacy as well as a number of students who apply for and attend selective high schools and extension and enrichment programs.
The school hosts many before and after school programs including: Robotics Lego, Spanish for beginners, Soccer Joeys, OOSH (Big Fat Smile), music classes, drama classes and band classes.
The school participates in the Illawarra Choral Festival, the Southern Stars Festival, the Instrumental Festival, the woodwind and strings festival, and debating, public speaking and other scientific and creative arts pursuits.
The successful candidate will be part of the executive team with the Principal and three other Assistant Principals. There is a focus on assessment, evidence for learning and evidence for continual teacher improvement. From 2020 there will be a focus on student wellbeing and staff wellbeing. The school community is environmentally conscious and in 2019 went to online notes and newsletters.
