Tasmanian Principals Association (TPA)

Professional development / Last updated 5 years, 3 months ago

The Tasmanian Principals Association support public school leaders and a thriving public education system. The TPA focuses on the highest quality leadership development. The TPA is recognised as a pivotal group in the formation of policy and strategic direction at Departmental and Government levels. All sections of the media respect the professional balance voice of the Tasmanian Principals Association.

The TPA is a professional association which has been in existence since 2004. For decades prior to this, principals were represented by TPPA (Primary) and TSPA (Secondary) associations. TPA represents leaders in the majority of our 200+ government schools in Tasmania. We have strong presence in, and links to, the national associations of principals: Australian Primary Principals Association (APPA), Australian Government Primary Principals Association (AGPPA), and Australian Secondary Principals Association (ASPA).

TPA has distilled its prime work into three key action areas:

  • Advocacy
  • Direct Member Support
  • Development of School Leaders

Examples of these include active advocacy related to school improvement to all levels of government, education services and bureaucracy; active participation on current policy reference groups; direct support/advocacy for members; and professional learning design and delivery for school leaders.

TPA Mission

The TPA exists to develop and support school leaders in Tasmania.
Our work will contribute to an optimistic Tasmanian community exhibiting an enthusiasm for school leadership. This will be reflected in sustained growth in the learning of our students and school staffs in a highly supportive professional environment.

TPA Vision

TPA wants all Tasmanian government school leaders to be highly skilled and work with a prime focus on developing the finest quality teaching in our schools.
We want our school leaders to be healthy, highly valued, well supported people who are key to linking schools and communities.

We want to be influential in educational decision making and will create productive alliances in Tasmania, interstate and nationally.

TPA Beliefs and Values

The TPA believes that high quality public education for all is an underpinning ideal in Tasmania. Public education underpins democracy, mitigates against social inequities, builds robust communities and enhances an individual’s life chances.
High quality public education leaders must be supported systemically, collectively and individually.

TPA believes that it can play a vital role in educational policy design, planning and implementation. We value fairness, integrity, trust, equity, teamwork and collaboration, humour, fun and a strong work ethic in the context of a healthy, happy life/work balance.
