Pelaw Main Public School is located south of Kurri Kurri. The school currently has a student population of 165 students, including 19 Aboriginal students. The school has seven classes and a teaching staff of seventeen.
The school’s Family Occupational and Education Index has been levelled at 141. Based on this, the school receives significant funding through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM). A number of specialist teachers support staff and students’ learning. The students are also supported by several School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs). The school implements a range of strategies to maximise success for all students, including Positive Behaviour for Learning and extensive orientation programs as well as Explicit Instruction pedagogies and the Berry Street Education Model. The school is a proud member of the Kurri Kurri Learning Community (KKLC). The schools in the KKLC work together to promote a comprehensive education from K-12, through a collaboratively developed strategic plan.
The Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction position is a leadership role dedicated to ensuring that literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills are embedded in curriculum and assessment; high quality teaching practices are enhanced; and the capabilities of middle leaders are strengthened in literacy and numeracy instruction. It shares the broader educational imperatives of the Assistant Principal position but with an explicit focus on the leadership of effective, evidence-based literacy and numeracy teaching and assessment practices for improved student learning outcomes across the curriculum.
The Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction provides high support and guidance to enhance teacher growth and development in literacy and numeracy and strengthens schoolwide instructional capabilities across the curriculum for middle and senior leaders.
