Kiwi Rail Scenic Journeys connect Auckland with the West Coast of the South Island and stop at many iconic destinations along the way. These journeys aren't just a means for travelling from A to B, they are a way to explore our nation, its natural beauty and its history, both ancient and modern. Our network is divided into three routes, with the InterIslander connect the North to the South Island, but you can board and disembark wherever you like.
The Northern Explorer
The Northern Explorer winds dramatically through the shadows of the mighty Ruapehu and Tongoriro mountains as it connects our cultural Capital with our City of Sails. This spectacular journey tells the story of how the railway spawned the development of our modern nation. At its heart lies the picturesque region of National Park, where adventure camping, hiking and skiing all deliver exceptional outdoor experiences, with mighty volcanoes, emerald pools and smouldering craters providing a memorable geological twist.
The Interislander
The InterIslander connects our two islands in dramatic style. Cruising in and out of Wellington’s picturesque harbour, the story of New Zealand’s settlement and modern history unfolds all around. Then, as it meanders peacefully through the Marlborough Sounds, a very different view of New Zealand rises from the sea. Visiting the other Island is an essential learning journey, and with direct links to the Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific trains, it is possible to travel from Auckland to Christchurch, through the very heart of our country.
The Coastal Pacific
Hugging the rugged coastline that has been battered and broken by the relentless Pacific Ocean and clinging dramatically to the foothills of the Kaikoura ranges, the Coastal Pacific is the perfect way to explore the South Island and connect to the North Island. The astonishing and memorable route between Picton and Christchurch delivers spectacular views and exceptional opportunities to explore our sea-life, with whale watching, swimming with dolphins and seal colonies all readily available to explore from the beautiful town of Kaikoura.
The TranzAlpine
As the TranzAlpine winds its way through the Southern Alps, students will journey through the geological and climatical changes that shape our world. This miraculous journey also reveals the story of our resolve, engineering capability and industrial heritage, with the fascinating story of the Midland Line and Arthur’s Pass to be told. At the end of the line they can travel back to the founding days of our modern history at Shanty Town or travel on to the ancient glaciers of the West Coast and the winter wonderland of Queenstown.
