Heide Museum of Modern Art

Excursion / Last updated 5 years, 4 months ago

Heide Museum of Modern Art, or Heide as it is affectionately known, began life in 1934 as the home of John and Sunday Reed. Heide became a focal point for progressive art and culture as the Reeds opened their home to like-minded individuals such as artists Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester and Danila Vassilieff.

The Reeds lived to see their vision fulfilled for Heide to become a public museum when Heide Park & Art Gallery opened in November 1981. It has since evolved into one of Australia's most important cultural institutions and for all who visit, Heide offers an inspiring, educational and thought-provoking experience of modern and contemporary art, architecture and landscape.

PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS

With a strong art historical significance Heide offers exciting learning opportunities for students from kindergarten through to Year 12, TAFE and higher education. Our programs include facilitated talks and practical workshops led by trained educators, artists and museum staff that align with the AUSVELS curriculum frameworks and VCE Study Designs.

"I just wanted to thank you for organising our talk yesterday. Carly Grace was absolutely fantastic and hit the mark in terms of content and engaging the students. Her knowledge and understanding of VCE Art was clearly evident and she had undertaken a lot of research and preparation on our behalf. All of my students, even though very quiet during the visit, commented on how great Carly was and how much they enjoyed the tour."

Responding to Art Tours

These 45-60min facilitated tours provide students with an overview of the museum, it’s fascinating history and the artworks on display. Our aim is to empower students, giving them a positive museum experience so that they become lifelong enthusiasts, visitors and supporters of the arts. They can be taken as stand-alone programs or in combination with a Making Art Workshop.
Cost: $6 per student

Making Art Workshops

In these workshops, students create artworks inspired by those seen on their tour and by their personal interests. These 90-120 min practical workshops are held in the purpose-built Sidney Myer Education Centre and are led by trained educators and artists.
Cost: $20 per student

Self-Guided Tours

Educators may bring their students for a self-guided tour of the exhibitions, gardens and sculpture park. We recommend students bring pencils and sketchbooks to make observational drawings. A range of FREE printable resources, developed by Heide Education staff, are available for these tours and can be downloaded from heide.com.au/education/resources

PROGRAMS FOR EDUCATORS

Heide also offers programs for educators at all levels and for all teaching methods that broaden the scope of curriculum-based activities they can offer their students. All programs meet the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) requirements for professional practice. Visit heide.com.au/education/programs-for-educators for more information.

"Best PD ever attended! I was able to apply the teaching strategies to my students the very next morning and my students responded really positively. The students used appropriate language and even commented on how much fun the lesson was and how impressed they were."
