Girrakool Educationm Training Unit (ETU) is a school for specific purposes located within the Frank Baxter Youth Justice Centre (YJC). The school caters for a maximum of 90 male students ranging in ages from 15 - 21 years. Classes contain a maximum of 6 students with one teacher and one School Learning Support Officer. All students have been committed by the courts to custodial sentences of varying lengths. Students present with a range of backgrounds and educational needs including behaviour difficulties, mental health issues and diagnosed disabilities. Girrakool ETU provides a supportive school environment through strong policies and procedures focused on safety and security. Aboriginal students currently represent approximately 35% of the total school enrolment. The school works collaboratively with Youth Justice and various community agencies in meeting the educational and transitional needs of students.
