Cooranbong Public School is situated in a semi-rural setting on  the western shores of Lake Macquarie.  It  has a current enrolment of 245 students with 20 of them identifying as having  an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background. The school has 11 classes  from Kindergarten to Year six, including a multi-categorical support class.

The  school's Family Occupation and Educational Index (FOEI) value is 126, which indicates a slightly higher disadvantage  than average. The school has received equity funding for Aboriginal students, EAL/D students  and for low socio-economic status.

The school has a strong focus on continuous, sustainable school improvement, with differentiated learning, within  a framework of high expectations. Project Based Learning has been introduced into some of the stages at school. The Early Action for Success (EAfS) program is running at the school with an appointed Deputy Principal.

The school has a  very strong commitment to Positive Education and is a Positive Behaviour for Learning school. Trauma Informed practices have been introduced into the learning environment.
