Camps and accommodation / Last updated 6 years, 4 months ago

Birrigai provides accommodation, catering and a range of educational experiences. Challenge yourself with our outdoor adventure programs – all linked to the Australian Curriculum.

A significant place in the land of the Ngunnawal peoples, the word ‘birrigai’ means laughter/to laugh, in the language of the Ngunnawal peoples.
Fun and laughter are part of everything we do at Birrigai. Come stay with us, eat with us and learn with us. We are your one-stop-shop for an excursion to the nation’s capital.

Situated in a beautiful bush setting at the foothills of the Australian Alps, away from urban distractions, Birrigai at Tidbinbilla is only 40 minutes from the Canberra CBD. Our natural setting provides unique opportunities for students to explore and learn about geology, water catchment management and wildlife protection.

Birrigai has been delivering day and residential educational and outdoor adventure programs to schools for over 20 years. Why not let us provide
you with accommodation and catering services, and help you build an excursion itinerary that combines our fun-filled outdoor adventure programs with visits to the national attractions in Canberra? Our high and low ropes programs will give your excursion that ‘wow’ factor!

On-site educational programs, led by our teachers, can be booked as half or full-day sessions. Program descriptors and risk assessments are
available on our website – www.tidbinbilla.com.au/birrigai. We also offer night-time activities to take the pressure off accompanying teachers.

Situated next door to the wonderful Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, we can also provide you with guaranteed wildlife experiences. Tidbinbilla hosts three endangered species recovery programs – the bettong, the Northern Corroboree Frog and the Brush Tail Rock Wallaby. Students can access the specialist vet clinic and talk with members of the wildlife team about species conservation.

Birrigai accommodates 186 students in dormitory-style cabins with separate teacher rooms.

Birrigai caters for students from Foundation to Year 12, across three themes:

  • Environmental - from cutting edge sustainability science to constructing an environmentally sustainable cubby house, we can show your  students how to ‘live lightly’. Get involved in the BFG — Birrigai Food Garden —, capture time via the Birrigai Mosaic; or learn about local geology at our Rock Cycle Pathway.
  • Heritage - reconstructed from local primary sources, we offer simulation and experiential programs relating to life in 19th Century rural Australia.
  • Outdoor Adventure - Try the ACT’s only Giant Swing, or go abseiling in the magnificent rock landscape of Birrigai. Find your own  challenge point and learn how to be part of a team.
