Resource Description

 

Literacy for my future - civic participation, pathways and further learning is the ideal resource for Pathways (VPC) students in Literacy Unit 3, as well as Life Skills High School and Transition Education students. There's lots of opportunities to work with a range of texts, practise decoding and analysing texts, finding information, discussing and collaborating on how to solve problems and researching sources of information and documents to help plan for future study, workforce participation and engagement in civics and the community.

 

What's inside?

This book includes resources, activity suggestions and printable pages to suit students who are learning about literacy with a focus on the civics and the community as well as pathways and further learning in the future. It can be used to support outcomes within Unit 3 Literacy, or high school life skills and transition students who do best with modified, accessible content:

 

Skill Builder

This section helps students build their skills related to core literacy, as they learn about researching, collaborating, summarising information They build vocabulary related to future options and community agencies and organisations, as well as learning about study and workplaces that might interest them.

Problem Solving

This section encourages students to read, share and discover community experiences and challenges, and use their skills to plan the best option to solve simple problems. Students use decoding skills to read simple texts and respond to them, and use communication skills to consider and respond to problems while working in small groups. This section is helpful for sharing information about community agencies that can provide support and learning about local networks and support options for home, community and workplaces.

Finding information

This section helps students collect, collate and organise information. They access websites and printed information and use their skills to decode and make meaning from the text. They relate their learning to local community contexts and examples, and work individually and in groups to complete learning tasks.

Making plans

Students build skills in planning activities and accessing information to help them participate in community activities, including scavenger hunts, safe partying, visiting community places and using public transport. They work on plans for future study and workforce participation, including applying for work, responding to job advertisements, and reading and using workplace documents.

My Future

Learn about how to find information, read and use documents and respond to opportunities for further study and learning.

Reflection

This section helps students reflect on their skills and focus on how to continue their literacy learning. Reflection on learning and experiences helps students think what has worked well, what excites them, and what they can take from the learning experience into the future.

 

Topics include learning about E-safety, finding out about the world of work, civic engagement and community activities, discovering further study, learning to use forms, online resources and documents in the community and at work, and learning about people and places in the community.
