Dressed to be oppressed: why uniforms are the bane of our school system

This week a Brisbane high school was in the news for punishing a hundred or so students for not wearing the stipulated shoes. It brought back memories from my first year of teaching in 1970, of a Year 11 who was expelled for refusing to get a haircut because his hair extended over his collar.
