The Wolanski Family Specialist Learning Centre (SLC) at Emanuel School serves students from K-12. As the name suggests, the SLC seeks to ensure that students with learning differences and difficulties flourish within the school to best effect, using targeted, proven teaching techniques in which recent research findings are trialled and embedded.
Our Teaching Assistants play an important role in assisting the SLC Team and other teachers in the integration and management of students with learning and behavioural difficulties in the mainstream classroom.
This is a part-time (0.6FTE), permanent position commencing in January 2025.
Reporting to the Head of SLC (High School), responsibilities of a Teaching Assistant include:
- Assisting in the integration and management of students with learning, behavioural and social difficulties in the mainstream classroom
- Guiding students in managing classroom expectations, both in terms of academic performance and behaviour, as determined by the teacher and school policies
- Alerting appropriate staff to any issues related to target students
- Providing a change of environment or respite to some students as required, by supervising rest breaks of different kinds, as directed by the teachers and SLC staff
- Assisting teachers with the production of materials for these students as directed
- Assisting teachers in the delivery of computer-mediated programs and interaction as directed.
Our Teaching Assistants should establishing a working relationship with our teachers such that, once in place, means that assistance can be delivered with minimal disruption or interruption and they become an integral part of the classroom.
About the Successful Applicant
The successful candidate will have an Australian-recognised Education Support qualification, a valid Working with Children Check and experience working in a school and/or in a similar education support capacity. Proven experience of working with students with high level behavioural needs in a mainstream classroom would be highly valued.
