About the role:

As the Senior Lawyer you will:

  • Draft timely, client focused expert legal advice on strategic policy, statutory interpretation, general legal issues, compliance issues, property law, including leasing, Land Act 1994 tenure issues, commercial and corporate law issues, litigation and information management.
  • Assist the General Counsel and Directors of Legal Services by drafting legal advice and services in respect of the Department's statutory obligations and regulatory regimes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the General Counsel and the Directors in providing quality, timely, solution based legal advice.
  • Provide timely legal advice to Departmental officers in relation to a broad range of complex areas of law as it pertains to the Department of Education.
  • Prepare legal documentation, specialist briefs, reports and reviews relating to legislation and legal issues as they relate to and impact on the Department.
  • Provide advice on and ensure the effective management of litigation claims, including personal injuries proceedings claims, WorkCover claims and anti-discrimination claims.
  • Provide legal advice to schools and all other areas of the Department to ensure protection of the Department's interests and to assist with compliance with the Department's statutory obligations and administrative arrangements.
  • Liaise with staff from all areas of the Department, including Central Office, Regional Offices, Corporate Services Units and schools in relation to complex and sensitive legal issues.
  • Prepare instructions for the General Counsel to send to the Crown Solicitor and to external providers of legal services on complex matters by providing clear and concise details of the issues, the legal and policy implications and the relevant law involved.
  • Prepare and deliver seminars and information sessions on various legal issues focused on particular client needs so as to facilitate efficiency in the operation
