School Counsellors are employed by the Catholic Schools Office, and report to the Coordinator of Student Wellbeing. Counsellors are allocated to schools throughout the Maitland Newcastle Diocese. The current vacancy is for 0.6 FTE at St Catherine’s K-12 College in Singleton and 0.3 FTE at St James’ Primary School in Muswellbrook.

Position Requirements:

School Counsellors provide direct services to schools including educational and psychosocial assessments, psychological treatment and counselling, crisis support. School counsellors also provide advice and consultation to teachers, parents, guardians and other stakeholders. Finally, school counsellors support school policies and practices to improve student wellbeing within the community. School counsellors are an integral part of the school learning support team and help children and young people to achieve academic success, psychological health and wellbeing and social and emotional wellbeing. Applicants must have a 4 year degree in psychology, social work or counselling (intern psychologists are welcome to apply). Supervision for intern psychologists may be able to be provided. Experience working with school-aged children is essential, and experience of working within schools will be highly regarded. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to working within the Catholic ethos.

Essential Criteria:

• Minimum 4 year qualification in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling
• Registration, or eligibility for registration, with AHPRA, AASW or PACFA
• Experience in educational and mental health assessments, understanding of behaviour support
• Experience in counselling and support of school aged children, and their families, preferably within a school setting
• Understanding of, and support of, the ethos of Catholic schools
• Ability to liaise with community agencies
• WWCC and current Police check

Desirable Criteria:

• Experience working in rural communities
• Experience working autonomously

Conditions of Employment:

Salary will be as per the Catholic Schools Office Psychologists/Counsellors salary scale, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Temporary position with possibility of ongoing employment. School counsellors are employed under the terms of an EA and are entitled to be absent from work during student vacation periods except in the case of a school emergency.
