Unlock the potential of your future leaders

Student leadership is recognised as an important aspect in the development of young people. Allowing students to experience and take a lead in decision making, problem solving and collaborative projects helps them develop skills that will stay with them into adulthood.

The Future Leaders Program provides secondary school students with the chance to learn and develop leadership skills. Drawing on DEC approved leadership strategies, our program allows students to discover the difference between popularity and leadership in an engaging, motivating and enjoyable environment.

Students exhibiting leadership potential will take part in a range of activities designed to build their knowledge and experience of communication, negotiation, decision making, goal setting and action planning.

Who should attend?

The program is suited to any student with a desire to lead. This may be SRC members, prefects, sporting club captains or any student demonstrating leadership potential.

There is no minimum or maximum number of students per school required to attend. However, for group dynamics, a team of approximately 10 students per school is ideal.

Program content

Over the 3-day program, students explore the following educational outcomes:

  • Goal setting and action planning

  • Group dynamics and teamwork

  • Communication and listening skills

  • Problem solving and decision making

  • Critical and creative thinking

  • Mediation and dispute resolution

  • Speaking in front of an audience.

Students participate in a range of theory sessions and outdoor education activities that focus on leadership traits and allow them to be applied.

Working in teams, students also design a School Action Plan that addresses a key school or community issue that is identified by the students prior to arrival at camp.

During their camp experience, students reflect on their learning and apply their knowledge in order to develop the plan.

At the conclusion of the program, each team presents their School Action Plan to the school community and are encouraged to implement their ideas on return to school. Principals, teachers and parents/caregivers are invited to attend the final session of the program.
