RIGOR IS NOT A FOUR LETTER WORD
with Dr Barbara Blackburn
Are you wondering about rigor? For many educators, it is a negative term that means "harder' or "double the work". Dr Barbara Blackburn's internationally recognized, practical, teacher-friendly concept of instructional rigor includes high expectations, scaffolding for instruction, and demonstration of learning.
"Rigor is creating an environment in which each student is expected to learn at high levels, and each is supported so he or she can learn at high level, and each student demonstrates learning at high level."
Dr Barbara Blackburn
Learn how to increase instructional rigor so that all students can reach higher levels of learning!
Appropriate for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas
The Australian Council for Educational Leaders in collaboration with Dr Barbara Blackburn present our latest collaborative webinar series this April through May “Rigor is Not A Four-Letter Word”. Presented across three stand-alone webinars available for individual or series registration this webinar series returns with popular demand following the highly popular and engaging 2019 series.
With its practical advice and helpful tools, Rigor Is NOT a Four-Letter Word will set you and your students on the fast track to higher learning and sustained success.
Barbara R. Blackburn offers practical ideas for raising expectations, increasing complexity, integrating scaffolding into instruction, creating open-ended choices and projects, and much more.
"When I am in schools working with teachers, I’m often asked why I care about rigor. They are also quick to tell me they care about rigor because they are told they have to. My response is simple. There are other reasons, such as the clear research base that shows our students need more rigor, the new Common Core Standards that require more rigor, or the number of students who graduate from high school ill-prepared for college or the workforce.
But my most important reason is this: rigor is not about giving students more to do, or punishing them with more homework. Rigor is about helping students learn at higher levels, and that’s why I became a teacher."
