KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
Discovering Resilience – safeguarding the mental health of young Australians
Hugh van Cuylenburg, Founding Director The Resilience Project
Mental ill health affects 1 in 4 adolescences and 1 in 7 primary school children. Hugh van Cuylenburg founded The Resilience Project to develop a program that would teach positive mental health strategies and build resilience in children.
Hugh, experience resilience in its purest form when he spent a year volunteering at an underprivileged school in the Himalayas. Inspired by this encounter, he developed research based teachable programs that emphasise the value of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness.
He has travelled to Primary and Secondary schools all over Australia to work with students, staff, parents and community groups and talk about the need of resilience in our students and the practical strategies required to develop resilience.
Hugh will be exploring the reasons for our high levels of mental stress in student and will be sharing teachable strategies for keeping children mentally healthy.

FP01 Fundamental movement skills, activity and health
Professor Tony Okely, Director, Early Start Research Institute, University of Wollongong.
This engaging presentation will examine the important link between fundamental movement skills (FMS), physical activity and health outcomes in children and youth. This session will highlight school and community research and evidence based interventions that promote and increase movement skills, physical activity while reducing sedentary behaviour.
Tony is an international expert with over 20 years of experience working with teachers, schools and the community in the area of fundamental movement skills and their relationship to physical activity and health outcomes

FP02 Respectful Relationships – You Are Not Alone!
Jenny Walsh, Consultant
Key issues around the implementation of Respectful Relationships Education within the school curriculum will be addressed in this insightful presentation. Practical ideas for the implementation of an effective program, suitable for teachers and school leaders, will be highlighted.
Jenny Walsh, is a former senior member of the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at La Trobe University. Jenny’s has extensive experience in school based relationships and sexuality education working with teachers, and writing state and national school curricula.

FP03 Dream and believe in possibility
Richard Colman AM, World and Paralympic Champion
Richard will share stories of living with a disability, traveling the world in a wheelchair, and will discuss many other topics including motivation, goals, leadership, and believing in your dreams. Join Richard as he shares his inspirational story that will encourage you to look at your students, particularly those with a disability, through a different lens.
Born in 1984 with spina bifida, world and Paralympic champion Richard Colman started his racing career in 1995 and has competed for Australia since 2002, including Rio in 2016. Richard also coaches and mentors up-and-coming athletes, and presents widely in schools and community organization on topics related to inclusion and people with a disability.

FP04 Leadership pathways and Strategies for accessing leadership positions

Christian Holdsworth, Assistant Principal, Mount Waverley North Primary School.
There are many opportunities and pathways for teachers to develop and demonstrate their capacity as leaders. Two school leaders will discuss their journey as teachers and leaders and discuss the many opportunities available to you and steps you can take to improve as a teacher and leader.
Peter has extensive experience as a secondary VCE teacher and principal. Peter was the was the co-ordinating author on the Inside and Out and Live It up VCE text books, is an ACHPER Fellow and currently sits on the School Sport Victoria Board
Christian’s background includes primary school physical education teaching, School Sport Victoria Regional Coordinator, ACHPER Victoria presenter and the mentoring of teachers new to the profession.

FP05 Outdoor Education in the Curriculum
Andrew Mannion, Luther College
Outdoor education and environmental studies have a unique space in the curriculum drawing together teachers from various backgrounds and perspectives. Challenges and issues within this area will be discussed along with perspectives on directions that could be taken to strengthen the place and impact of outdoor education in the curriculum and school environment.
Andrew Mannion has been a leader of VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies for many years and has held the roles of teacher, mentor, curriculum advisor, exam marker and author in this area of study. Andrew currently teaches at Luther College and has an extensive understanding of VCE OES course design and outdoor education in the curriculum.
